Why should you consider buying a custom detached garage?

Detached garages create the perfect space for your cars, bikes, ATVs, tools, and more!

If you are investing in a garage, then you want to get it right. And customization is a great way to make sure you get exactly what you want.

Custom detached garages are typically less expensive than adding on to your home and come with less zoning and HOA restrictions.

So if you are thinking about a custom detached garage, here are some questions to consider.

What size garage should I choose?

The beauty of a custom detached garage is that you can place the garage shed anywhere on your property where you have space. But how do you know how big to build it or what size to buy? An average car is 14’ in length, a small pickup truck is 18’, and full pickup trucks, SUVs, and vans are about 20’ – 22’ in length.

To make the most of your space, you’ll first want to measure the exact size of your car to allocate enough room for your vehicle. Then, you’ll want to measure for any storage or workspace you want to have. Typically, it’s best to allow at least 4’  for a small storage space that can hold bikes, tools, etc., and approximately 10’ if you desire more storage and a work area.

Finally, you’ll want to take these measurements outside and map out in your yard the exact location of where you want your new garage to go. So grab that tape measure and get to measuring! If it fits, it sits!

How do I prep the ground for a detached garage?

After you’ve chosen the landing site for your garage, you’ll want to clear the space. Remove all vegetation and measure out the perimeter of your foundation to be slightly larger than the shed dimensions of your garage. The idea here is to create a perfectly level and compacted base for your garage.

Depending on the size of your garage, you may need to call local city or county officials to discover what type of foundation is necessary. You should also check with your garage builder to find out their requirements/recommendations. For most larger garages, you will want to lay a slab of concrete that works in compliance with your local building department codes. You can either DIY this or hire it out!

What type of customization can I do?

When it comes to detached garages, you can choose a lot of different options. Customized detached garages give you the option to choose different sizes and styles of doors, siding, trim, roofing, flooring, windows, workspaces and storage solutions. Work with your builder to find out what customization options they offer so you can get exactly what you want.

Should I add heat or electricity to my detached garage?

If you’re in a location that gets cold in the winter or if you want to spend a lot of time in your garage, you should consider adding heat. Heat is not necessary, but it can add much comfort during wintertime- especially if you plan to work long hours in your garage. There are many ways you can add heat to a detached garage.

Installing insulation is a good idea if you plan to contain and trap the heat. However, this is more costly and not always necessary. Other options you can consider include a direct-vent gas heater or a mounted electric heater. These are great options that are very effective for both large and small garages.

Adding electricity is more common than adding heat and requires hiring an electrician to run a subpanel from your garage to your home. Assuming a 20’ distance between the two, the cost of this will typically range from $1,000 – $1,500 (but can get up to $4,000 in special circumstances). Electricity is highly recommended and considered essential for most garages.
